Squaw was chosen as ski resort for the 1960 Olympic VIII Games. Opened in 1949 with just one lift and a lodge, today, it is one of world's premier destination resorts with year-round recreation and first-class accommodations. There are 170 scenic trails on 4,000 skiable acres on the resort’s six mountain peaks: Snow King (7,500 feet); Broken Arrow (8,020 Feet); Emigrant (8,700 feet); Squaw Peak (8,900 feet); and Granite Chief (9,050 feet). Squaw Valley boasts to have 300 days of cloudless, sunny skies per year. There are a total of three terrain parks. The Riviera Superpipe is 400 feet with 18.5 walls which are fully lit and available for night skiing and riding the high Camp yard is designed especially with the freestyle skier in mind. The Yard is ever evolving with new additions. There are activities for the children as well making Squaw Valley family friendly. The Squaw Kids Children’s Center is a one of a kind 12,000 square foot facility dedicated to children with a complete full service rental shop, a private ski hill with a Pony tow and two Magic Carpet Lifts. The Squaw Children’s Center has programs geared for specific age groups ensuring the activities will engage the children. For teenage skiers and snowboarders with intermediate skills, there is the Squaw Sessions program. Squaw Valley offers recreational activities for the non-skiers in the family as well. There is ice skating at the Olympic Ice Pavilion. A scenic cable car ride is a leisurely vertical 2,000 foot ride to High Camp where visitors can go to the Olympic Museum which commemorates the 1960 winter Olympics which took place at Squaw Valley. Squaw Valley’s Swimming Lagoon and Spa is also located at High Camp where guests can enjoy spectacular vistas of the Sierra Mountains and Lake Tahoe. The base camp features custom snow tubes, guided dog sledding through the Squaw Valley Meadow along a 2.5 mile trail. The Headwall Climbing Wall and Sky Jump are also located at the base camp. The Resort at Squaw Creek offers a complete Nordic center at the trailhead of the cross country ski and snowshoe trails. Squaw Valley offers a broad range of dining choices both on the mountain as well at the base camp. Cuisine ranges from burritos, pizza and salads to stir fry and sushi. There is plenty of nightlife at the bars and cantina at the base camp. A favorite with visitors is Breakfast at High Camp where guests can enjoy the early morning mountain views with delicious selections from the breakfast buffet. The Village at Squaw offers a variety of lodging and ski packages featuring one bedroom condos with a living area with a fireplace, kitchen, balcony and King sized bed. The Franciscan Lakeside Lodge has one bedroom cabins with a queen bed and two twin beds as well as a kitchen. Lift tickets at Squaw Valley are included in the price of the lodging.
